I’m trying to make homemade gifts this Christmas (for example, an apron for a friend, a dress up superhero cape for my nephew, etc) & I’m trying to think of a good homemade gift for my mother who loves to quilt. I know NOTHING about quilting. Any suggestions?

What a nice idea – she’ll love it!
A sewing ‘chatelaine’ is very handy for any quilter – one link below is for a version they call a ‘neck ribbon caddy’, the other a ‘pincushion/scissors holder’.

The caddy from this site is useful for all sewers.

Most quilters can always use an extra pincushion – there are free patterns all over the net. Scissors cases and rotary cutter cases are handy, and easy to make from a potholder (fold it in half and sew one end and the long side, leaving the other end open – it should look like an eyeglasses case), but measure her cutter or scissors to be sure they’ll fit.
      Good luck.

There are lots of cute ideas out there for making pin cushions. Make one from a vintage tea cup, do a cupcake, etc.

      A couple of sites:

Can you embroider? Try making a small wall hanging with the family members names and birth dates or anniversaries each in a little heart. Kind of like a family tree of love.

I love the pin cushion idea that the first person put. Too cute! Look at yard sales and thrift stores for a cute vintage teacup.

A needle holder from a small bottle (old pill bottle, etc.) covered in velvet or embroidery…or even covered with glued on beads.
I received a little roll out caddy…had place for pins, needles, thread , scissors, tape measure, etc. I’ll include a few links to get you started…oh, my favorite gift was when someone sent me a thread catcher! It is a little cloth bag with a wire in the brim to hold it open. It’s held to the table by a 4×4" tile that is padded and covered in cloth…makes a pin cushion for beside the machine… love it!

Note: the above link (also given below) uses sand to make the pincushion to hold the bag in place. the one I made used a 4 x4" ceramic tile (like those used on a countertop/backsplash). it was inserted into the pincushion pouch (called a bag in this version)…and stuffed with poly batting & a piece of foam. Sand would have been nice, as it sharpens the pins & needles.

You can also adapt by using a placemat and attaching the bag to that..the placemat goes under the machine…and the machine holds the bag for thread scraps in place.

      Hope this helps!

Pin cushions are easy & always in demand by sewers & quilters.

How about a gift card/certificate from a local quilt shop in addition to the already-mentioned homemade items! Any quilter would LOVE that!
